Richmond, VA – This morning, the Virginia Senate Committee on Local Governments advanced SB 595, patroned by Senators Lashrecse Aird (D-13) and Lamont Bagby (D-14). This legislation is a meaningful step in the fight for economic justice by authorizing localities to adopt healthy community strategies as part of their community strategy. The measure was reported with bipartisan support. The Senate Democrats issued the following statement in support of the legislation.
Senator Lashrece Aird stated, “This is a pivotal step towards environmental equity. It empowers our communities to identify and tackle pollution at its source, ensuring that neighborhoods historically burdened by environmental hazards can now breathe easier. This legislation is not just about creating healthy environments; it’s about paving the way for optimal futures.”
Senator Lamont Bagby stated, “This legislation is a beacon of hope for communities of color that have long suffered the brunt of environmental neglect. By enabling localities to focus on areas most affected by pollution, SB 595 directly addresses the health disparities that disproportionately impact our communities. It’s a commitment to clean environments and the respect and dignity our communities deserve.”
Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke added, “Healthy communities are the foundation of a thriving society, and SB 595 lays the groundwork for this vision. By integrating health and wellness into our urban planning, we’re not just changing landscapes – we’re transforming lives. This strategy goes beyond environmental reform; it’s a holistic approach to community well-being, ensuring every resident has the right to a healthy, vibrant community.”
