Richmond, VA –Today would have marked the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that protected the constitutional right to abortion until June 24, 2022.
“On a day that should have been an anniversary, we are reminded yet again about the importance of decisions for all those who live in America. Unfortunately, we are not celebrating. We have not taken a break. Yet, we are continuing the fight to keep the fundamental right of reproductive healthcare freedom accessible in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Roe v. Wade was a monumental and historic ruling for women’s decision and reproductive healthcare. In recent years, we have seen this fundamental right continue to be attacked by MAGA Republicans across the nation who believe that healthcare decisions should be left in the hands of elected officials. This legislative session we have seen a number of bills that would roll back access to an abortion and reproductive healthcare we’ve gained over the last several years.
The impact of removing reproductive healthcare freedom is a clear and blatant attack on Virginians. Those who are part of the LGBTQ, as well as women of color seem to be the main groups under attack with these harmful bills.
To be clear, Virginia will not settle for anything less than the freedom for all individuals to make their own healthcare decisions. The choice in which all individuals have a right to make their own decisions about their bodies and what to do with them.
The majority of Virginians are supporters of abortion access, and we aren’t going anywhere. It will take all of us to secure our freedom to control our lives and safely care for ourselves, our families, our communities and our Commonwealth.”
