RICHMOND, VA – In a year in which reproductive health and rightwing extremism were on the ballot, Virginia Senate Democrats have held their majority.

“It’s official: there will be absolutely no abortion ban legislation sent to Glenn Youngkin’s desk for the duration of his term in office, period, as we have thwarted MAGA Republicans’ attempt to take total control of our government and our bodies,” said Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke. “Voters saw the good work of the Democratic majority in the Virginia Senate and have rewarded us with four more years. Virginia voters said they want to keep Virginia a safe haven for abortion rights, voting rights, workers’ rights, justice reform, and LGBTQ rights, and that is exactly what they will get. We will build on our work to make Virginia more affordable for hardworking people and will prioritize our kids and our schools over corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Even Youngkin’s efforts to buy the election and purge eligible voters from the rolls could not overwrite the will of the people.”

“The Senate Democratic Majority showed today that it stands with the majority of Virginians, and Glenn Youngkin overreached with Virginia voters to try to become a presidential candidate said Senate Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Scott Surovell.

Virginians rejected his attempt to frame an abortion ban as a “reasonable compromise,” his attacks on public education with teacher snitch lines and book bans, and his efforts to scare Virginians about a crime spree that did not exist.  Virginia’s voters are smarter than that, and the Senate Democratic Caucus proved tonight that the Emperor has no clothes except for a red sweater vest.”

“We are proud of all the hard work of our colleagues, candidates, staff, Democratic committees, volunteers, and grassroots supporters, who have helped us secure this victory tonight. Senate Democrats are proud of their work this legislative session, as well as this campaign season, advocating for the rights of all those who live in the Commonwealth.”The Senate Democratic Caucus remains a brick wall standing strong, proud, and victorious over MAGA Republican ideology today and going into the future, said the Senate Democratic Caucus Campaigns Committee. This latest attempt by the Virginia GOP to hijack the Senate majority was unsuccessful this evening. Virginians have decided to protect women’s right to make their own healthcare decisions. They said ‘no’ to Governor Glen Youngkin’s proposed abortion ban and the unprecedented tens of millions of dollars from out-of-state billionaires and private equity friends, and yes to a Democratic majority that will protect reproductive rights, work to end gun violence in our schools, and lower healthcare costs for our families.”
